Safe Listening, Hearing Accessibility, and the Future of Live Events

When ArcTanGent announced it would become the UK's first Safe Listening Festival, it marked an important step forward for the live events industry.

Working alongside leading universities, hearing health specialists, and industry partners, the festival is demonstrating that incredible live music experiences and responsible sound management can go hand in hand, aligning with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Standard for Safe Listening Venues and Events and the Healthy Ears, Limited Annoyance (HELA) Initiative.

As a long-standing partner of ArcTanGent, we're proud to be working with the festival and providing Silent Disco experiences that allow attendees to enjoy music in a completely different way - one that puts control directly into the hands of the listeners.

Safe Listening Starts with Choice

One of the biggest advantages of a Silent Disco is choice.

Unlike traditional loudspeaker systems, Silent Disco headphones allow every attendee to adjust their own listening volume and select their preferred channel of music, creating a personalised experience that suits their comfort level while still delivering exceptional audio quality.

While a crucial part of safe listening is about making sure that audio volume is at a comfortable level, for us, it's also about giving event-goers the tools and empowering them to enjoy music responsibly.

Accessibility is Part of the Conversation

While hearing protection is rightly becoming a major focus across the events industry, hearing accessibility deserves just as much attention.

According to the House of Commons Library, 25% of the UK population have disabilities, and 24% of working-age adults identify as being disabled (Stiebahl et al, 2025). The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) reports that one in three UK adults are deaf, have hearing loss, or suffer from tinnitus (RNID, 2025). An estimated 2.4 million adults in the UK struggle to hear most conversational speech due to various hearing issues (RNID, 2025). Whether it's struggling to hear announcements, follow performances, or fully engage with the experience, accessibility can often be overlooked during event planning.

Innovative audio technology, such as Silent Disco systems, are helping event organisers rethink how they deliver sound. By providing clear, direct audio to each listener, these solutions can create more inclusive experiences and support a wider range of audience needs.

No single solution works for everyone, but the industry is moving in the positive direction by exploring ways to make live events both more enjoyable and more accessible.

A Positive Direction for Live Events

ArcTanGent becoming the UK’s first Safe Listening Festival shows how events can embrace precaution and protection without compromising the live experience.

By bringing together research, education, and practical implementation, they're helping to shape a future where audience wellbeing, accessibility, and incredible sound all work together.

We're excited to see more festivals and live events continuing this conversation, and we're proud to play our part in supporting immersive, engaging experiences that put people first.
